Editors Grieve Publisher NewsDirect, Express Sadness and Shock

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) expressed deep sorrow and shock upon hearing the news of the passing of Dr Samuel Ibiyemi, one of its dedicated members and Publisher of NewsDirect Newspapers Group, on Tuesday.

At the age of 56, Dr Ibiyemi passed away at the Babcock University Teaching Hospital, Ilisan, Ogun State, where he was receiving medical treatment.

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja by NGE President Eze Anaba and General Secretary Dr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren, the professional association for editors in Nigeria described the late publisher as a committed member of the NGE who left a lasting impact on the field of journalism, having worked as a reporter, business editor, editor, and publisher.

‘’Even during the time when Dr. Samuel Ibiyemi was fighting for his life in the hospital, journalism remained his passion. He wanted to be updated on the latest developments in our society and he called to inquire about the outcome of the NGE national biennial convention held in Owerri.

‘’We maintained regular contact with him and his family. He expressed his determination to recover and we were eagerly anticipating his discharge from Babcock University Teaching Hospital in Ilisan, where he was being treated.

‘’Dr. Ibiyemi had a strong passion for journalism and contributed to various newspapers before establishing his own publication, Nigerian NewsDirect, 13 years ago. He was a committed member of the NGE and we find solace in the fact that he made significant contributions to the profession as a reporter, editor, and publisher before his demise. His legacy, NewsDirect Newspapers, continues to make an impact through its informative, educational, and engaging content,” the editors stated.

As the NGE offered condolences to Dr Ibiyemi’s family, friends, and the entire journalism community, they prayed that the Almighty God would grant them, especially his widow and children, the necessary strength during this challenging time and the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

The NGE added, ‘’Dr Ibiyemi’s memory will be kept alive through the profound impact he had on the world. He is now in a better place, watching over us. We are praying for his loved ones and family during this difficult time.

‘’We wish his loved ones peace, comfort, courage, and abundant love as they grieve. Our hearts go out to all of them during this challenging period. Dr Samuel Ibiyemi will never be forgotten. May he rest in eternal peace.’’

The NGE stated that if the earth that covers the late publisher feels light, it is because he epitomized humanity, courage, truth, faith, and hard work.
