Niger Governor Dissolves NSIEC, Set To Submit Commissioners’ List

The commissions and boards in Niger State are being dismantled by Governor Mohammed Umar Bago as there is increasing political pressure for appointments.

The board of the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC) was ordered to be dissolved by the governor yesterday.

Alhaji Abubakar Usman, the Secretary to the state government, disclosed that Governor Bago gave the order, effective May 29, 2023.

He stated, “Members of the commission were instructed to hand over all property of the State Government in their possession to the most senior Director in the Commission immediately.”

Meanwhile, Bago is preparing to release the list of commissioners and special advisers, while politicians and others are stepping up their lobbying efforts.

LEADERSHIP learned that some individuals have taken their lobbying to Senator Mohammed Sani Musa, who represents Niger East and is believed to have influence with the governor and the immediate past governor, Abubakar Sani Bello.

A source close to the governor revealed that “some people have already begun exerting pressure on the governor, but he has promised to make appointments based on competence and merit with proper consultation.”
